Multi Caliber Individual Weapon System (MCIWS)
The deal that never took off its grounds , mciws would have been a great weapons system if the dream of a multi calibre gun would have been released , the gun would have featured NATO approved 5.56mm burst rounds for close combats and close enemy engagements , and large 7.62 rounds for mid range enemy engagements and single call enemy neutralization , but where did the indian research behemoth went wrong ?
Above is a schematic overview of the weapon system added with retractable butt and a grenade launcher equipped , sort of indian version of Colt m4 , with capacity to engage 5.56 aswell as 7.62 rounds .
Where did we failed to realize once a great dream ?
The dream was to have a holistic rifle that could be used in all of indian theatres and frontiers , chilling ladakh to blazing thar , one and only one standard issued rifle that could replace the carbines and issued old INSAS and akm variants .
The area we failed was non-sense requirements from the primary buyer , the indian military itself.
It was being developed for indian army's multi calibre rifle requirements, but then army changed it's requirements again to a single calibre rifle. There are carbine derivates of MCIWS chambered in 5.56×45mm and 6.8×43mm, The 5.56 variant is also a contender for indian Army's carbine requirements but sigs from the usa won the bet , not a homegrown system
A Legacy of non sense requirements lead to death of a system that could have been a free market competition to colt m4 and hecker and koch g36 .
Death of a system that could have been a real " game changer " .
